In order to get an accurate quotation for your freight requirements, you need to provide the following:

• Information about where your cargo is being shipped to and from
• The transport mode and equipment being used (e.g. by ocean on pallets)
• Shipment details, including dimensions, weight and a description of the goods.
• Incoterm documentation

Legally, all carriers must carry a minimum amount of insurance, known as carrier liability. However, carrier liability provides very limited coverage, and anything from natural disasters to vehicle accidents or even acts of war could damage your cargo.

Therefore, shippers can request cargo insurance to protect their goods from loss, damage, or theft while in transit. Generally, goods are insured while being stored and while in transit, until they reach the buyer.

It is important to package / wrap your goods in robust packaging material to help prevent the goods from being damaged during transport. Some of the materials you can use as a layer of cushioning within your boxes can be; packaging peanuts, bubble wraps, foam wrap or paper in between your items so that they don’t run against each other.

You can also follow these simple steps:

1. Use a new, double walled box to package your items in. Re-used boxes offer less protection for your precious cargo.
2. Use plenty of internal packaging to secure your items. Every layer of padding is an extra layer of protection.
3. Weigh and measure your parcel after it’s fully packaged. If your parcel is bigger or heavier than stated on your booking, you could face extra charges.
4. Clearly write the collection and delivery address onto your parcel in a permanent marker.
5. Print 2 copies of your label if your chosen delivery service needs one. Attach one to the outside and pop the other inside just in case the main label falls off.
6. Use strong parcel tape on all edges of your parcel. It’ll help reinforce the corners of the box and make sure your parcel won’t fall open.
7. Attach your pro-forma invoices in an envelope on the outside of the parcel if required. It’ll help customs so that they don’t need to open up your parcel.
8. Take a look at your packaged parcel and make a note of any distinguishing features. If your parcel needs identifying later, every detail will help.
